Owning The Shit Out of My Sexuality

Growing up, my family was pretty out there; definitely not what most would define as conservative and yet I felt the taboo surrounding sex and sexuality. For me it never made sense why people would get so weird around the topic because we literally wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for sex. It took a while to really realize that women enjoying sex and talking about it openly, in a positive light were all ok things to do. Mind you, this was after high school; 4 years in which I witnessed many men being celebrated for their ‘sexcapades’ while the women they were sleeping with were shamed. Hello double standards.

Sex as it pertains to pleasure is often seen as a masculine thing. This is why many publications that write articles about sex, ‘for women’ will gear the topics towards pleasing a man. When I snuck these magazines as a teenager, I didn’t bat an eye at the articles that were supposedly for me but also titled “How to Blow His Mind.” It’s madness.

So, how do you we shift this thinking within ourselves and for other people?

Talking about it; honestly and openly. Starting those thought provoking conversations with your friends, families, partners, etc. Asking questions. Explore your body. Wear whatever you like. Have all the sex you want. Have no sex, if you want. Make sure that the pleasure coming from sexual activities is mutual. Don’t be afraid to call people out if it’s not. Be safe. No matter what; CONSENT.
