Valentine's Day is for Love

Ah, Valentine’s Day. The day of love where couples all around the world shower each other with

gifts and affection.

Valentine’s Day being for lovers wasn’t something that I understood as a kid. Growing up with

my single mom, we always celebrated Valentine’s Day together.

Without fail, every year my mom would have a bouquet of flowers sent to my school. They’d

show up in a vase and I’d proudly display them on my desk for the rest of the day.

We’d share the evening together, too. My mom would take me out for dinner and shower me in

small heart shaped gifts and treats.

She taught me from a young age that Valentine’s Day is about loving yourself and the people

you value most in your life - your friends and family.

If you don’t have a traditional Valentine this year, why not make it yourself or your best friend?

Heck, your Valentine could even be your pet.

I’ve put together a small list of ways to spend Valentine’s Day alone. Feel free to share some of

these things with the people you love most!

Buy Yourself Flowers

Who says someone else has to buy you flowers? Head to your local florist, or even the grocery

store, and pick up something pretty for yourself.

Have a Bath

Light some candles, grab a good book and have a hot, relaxing bath. Throw in some of your

flower petals for extra self-love. Decompress with some epsom salts and a nice face mask.

Eat Some Chocolate

Is it really Valentine’s Day without chocolate? Obviously not. Save yourself the money and buy

your V Day sweets on February 15th. Your treats will be even sweeter when they’re 50% off.

Take Yourself on a Date

Get dressed up and take yourself on a date! Head to your favourite restaurant, go to the cinema

or visit a new art gallery. This might feel unnatural or scary at first, but I promise you’ll feel more

comfortable as your date goes on. I love dating myself so much now that I even see scary

movies on my own.

Stay in a Hotel

Take a staycation! If you just want to avoid the day entirely, bundle up in a nice hotel and take

advantage of all their amenities. Relax in the hotel spa or hot tub before ordering room service

and renting your favourite movie.

Buy Yourself a Present

Buy yourself a gift, wrap it and open it. Heck yes. Shoes, bath bombs, books, perfume. I don’t

care what it is, if you want it, why not treat yourself?

I almost added “Bundle yourself in blankets and watch Netflix”, but because this is something I

frequently do anyway, I decided against it.

The moral is, share Valentine’s Day love with yourself and with the people you love. Don’t just

limit that love to February 14th either. Love yourself everyday.

Because, in the words of RuPaul, if you can’t love yourself, how the hell are you going to love

somebody else?
