I hope you know that what you look like doesn’t even begin to crack the surface of who you really are. There is so much more to you than the cheekbones that sit beside your nose and lay above your chin. There is more to you than the crinkles around your eyes when you smile or the way your right eyebrow curves differently from your left.
If only you took the time to uncover the type of beauty inside of you that truly matters. Then, maybe you’d see what I see. Maybe you’d feel the way I do when I look at you and don’t see you for your red lips or your long eyelashes. Maybe you’d feel the way I do when I look at you and see the kindness in your heart and the passion exploding from your brain, full of ideas and aspirations, imaginations and thoughts that others wouldn’t dare to dream.
If only you took the time to look inside yourself and realize that what lies beyond your outer appearance is what will truly guide you to become the person you’re meant to be. Your motivation and your talent, your dedication to pursue whatever the hell gets you out of bed each morning, your capability to stay true to who you really are, even if it goes against the grain of what others want for you, these are the things inside of you that matter. These are the things that the people who truly love you admire most.
This is what I wish for you: I hope the next time you look into the mirror you see that you’re worth much more than your appearance. I hope the next time you think about changing the way you look to make yourself happy or to make yourself look the way you think you “should,” you see that adjusting yourself on the outside won’t fix you on the inside. I hope the next time you look into the mirror you don’t see the parts about yourself you wish to change, whether it’s your body or your face, or anything about your contagious smile.
I hope instead you see the parts about yourself that won’t always look back at you every morning. I hope you see the warmth you bring to others and the gifts you give to the world. I hope you see the things about yourself that won’t be advertised on magazine covers or modeled by filtered women on Instagram. The things that are far deeper in your soul that the people who only take the time to learn your surface will never be so lucky to see. I hope the next time you’re extremely hard on yourself and pick apart your appearance you remember the beauty behind it. I hope you always remember you are worth so much more than what you look like.
